Help me to learn myself Mum and Dad!

The positive news is there are some chores we can coach our toddlers and children in doing themselves every day, not just on Mother’s Day!
You can introduce these practical and helpful habits which will shorten your to-do-list and develop your little ones independence and life skills at home.
Start introducing, encouraging and helping your little stars learn to do these things from around the age of 2:
- Choose what to wear (probably from a selection of clothes). A wise and style conscious Mother might start by arranging a drawer or box with her choice of clothes which are easily accessible for the child, easy to put on and suitable for the season.
- Get dressed by themselves (you will need to show her how). This will be a real life-saver if you have more children, especially when it comes to the nursery, school or after-school football club run. This is not a quick process as there is A LOT to learn for a tiny tyke to master from zips to buttons and clips. Start with time, patience, loose clothing, elasticated waists and velcro fastenings.
- Pour her own milk onto cereal, butter her own toast, pour her own drink, bring her plate back to kitchen. Small, light jugs most suitable for small hands, a proper butter knife (flat, rounded and not for cutting) and plastic or hardy china plates and bowls will help to aid her trajectory from breakfast minx to breakfast helper.
- Brush their own hair. A wise Mother will make sure everyone has their own hairbrush, labelled, specific to each child and kept in the same place in each child’s room or a communal drawer in the kitchen or hallway. They can’t do it if you or they can’t find it.
- Put on their own shoes, socks and coat. This is one is close to my heart as I often see parents putting on and doing up the velcro on shoes of children who are old enough to read and tie laces, not be a slave to velcro!
At Kiddikicks we believe in helping children to learn to help themselves. Kiddikicks runs #kidsfootball classes for toddlers and children. We help them to let off steam in a safe, creative and structured environment where they don’t just learn football skills but life skills too. Find-A-Class or call us on 020 7 937 7965.
